Most people believe that Shakespeare wrote 38 plays in total. However, a new play has recently been added to the canon bringing the final number to 39.
The new play is called Double Falsehood. Although we’ve known about the play for many years, Shakespeare has only recently been identified as the author (in collaboration with another playwright).
It will take time for Double Falsehood to be widely recognised as the work of Shakespeare, but the evidence seems fairly sound.
So, to answer the question: “how many plays has Shakespeare written?” 38 definite – but maybe 39!
Our list of Shakespeare plays brings together all 38 plays in the order in which they were first performed. You can also read our study guides for the Bard’s most popular plays.
