Happy Birthday William Shakespeare! As ever, Shakespeare's birthday on 23 April triggers a raft of news stories the world over. After careful review, here are my favourite from China, Europe and the US.

  1. Travel By Numbers: Shakespeare
To mark the Bard's birthday, the travel pages of the Independent reviewed the numbers and locations that influenced the playwright's work.
  2. Should we care who wrote William Shakespeare's plays?
Shakespeare's birthday is never complete without a quick dip into the Shakespeare authorship debate, this year provided by the Guardian's Mark Lawson.
  3. Happy Birthday, William Shakespeare
A lovely reminder from the American Thinker on why we should continue to love Shakespeare.
  4. Controversial Chinese writer plans surgery to look like Shakespeare
The China Post reports the weirdest story of the day: that a Chinese author is planning to spend $153,500 on plastic surgery to look like William Shakespeare.

I taught Shakespeare in our Junior High of Colegio San Agustin, Philippines for the past 15 years and we have made it a tradition for the students to celebrate a Shakespearean Festival sometime January February (April 23 falls during our summer break). This culminates 3 months of studying slected works of the Bard. During the culminating activity, students come to school in Elizabethan costumes, and showcase speeches or excerpts from Will’s plays in the mini theatre. This year, I hope to be able to conduct a Bard’s walk and street presentation. we had not been successful on street presentation last year.

It is always a memorable experience for our students.
